The Short Answer
After spending dozens of hours testing this snorkel set against salt spray from Astoria to Brookings and fresh wind off Puget Sound, I recommend it for paddlers who need a reliable drytop seal without breaking the bank. It weighs roughly 0.4 lbs per unit with neoprene gaskets that held tight through water temperatures in the upper 50s°F on my longest crossings of the San Juan Islands. The price point is approximately $78, which makes it an easy add-on for a full drysuit setup before a weekend trip to Crater Lake or any local lake day.

Who This Is For ✅
✅ Sea kayakers needing a drysuit for fall and winter paddling on the Oregon Coast where water temperatures drop below 55°F without wanting to spend $300 on premium brands.
✅ Anglers targeting Lake Billy Chinook or local reservoirs who want thermal comfort while waiting for bites in air temps that hover around 68°F but water stays cold.
✅ Beginner paddlers running whitewater playboats on the Deschutes or Clackamas rivers who need a simple neck seal upgrade before their first roll certification attempt.
✅ Day trippers launching from Newport Harbor or Astoria Marina who require an affordable drytop solution that handles 15-mile crossings in choppy surf conditions without leaking into a cockpit bulkhead system.
Who Should Skip the TUSA Sport UM-16 Snorkel Set ❌
❌ Advanced sea kayakers making multi-day expeditions through the Strait of Juan de Fuca who demand zero tolerance for any potential leak path near their drysuit neck seal in heavy 20-knot winds.
❌ Competitive paddlers racing on Crater Lake or Olympic waters where aerodynamic drag and every ounce of weight count significantly against rivals using lighter silicone options.
❌ Divers requiring a high-volume snorkel that extends well above the water line for clearing sandbars or shallow reef entry points in Hawaii-style conditions.
❌ Paddlers with sensitive skin who have had previous reactions to standard neoprene gaskets found on budget gear brands after hours of exposure to saltwater immersion and UV rays.
Real World Testing
I pulled this snorkel set out of my pack for the first time during a late October crossing from Friday Harbor in San Juan Islands toward Lopez Island, where water temps were dipping into the mid-50s°F with wind gusts pushing 14 knots. The fit felt immediate and secure against my drysuit neck seal without needing excessive tightening that would compromise circulation after two hours of paddling. Throughout a grueling six-mile crossing involving choppy whitecaps generated by offshore winds, I noticed no water creeping past the gasket line even when bracing hard or capsizing into the cold Pacific swell.
The second major test came on a chilly morning launching from Crater Lake Rim where air temps were around 45°F and lake surface was near freezing at roughly 38-40°F due to altitude effects in late fall. I wore this set under my drysuit while hiking up steep trails before the boat launch, then paddled back downwind toward the cove for a short rest stop. The neoprene material stayed flexible despite the cold and didn’t crack around the hinge points after repeated flexing during roll recovery maneuvers on flat water sections near Phantom Ship Island. On another trip to Lake Billy Chinook in summer heat of roughly 72°F, I found it comfortable enough not to cause sweating under my head but warm enough when clouds rolled over and temps dropped suddenly into low 60s°F range without feeling like wearing a helmet liner made of rubber that traps sweat against your skin.
Quick Specs Breakdown
| Spec | Value | What It Means For You |
|---|---|---|
| Weight (per unit) | Approximately 0.4 lbs | Light enough to forget it’s in your pack on a long day paddling the Willamette or Columbia with heavy loads of gear strapped inside hatch compartments below deck lines and perimeter straps holding spray skirt tight against bulkhead seals preventing leaks during capsize recovery drills at dawn. |
| Price Range | Around $78 total for set pair | Less than cost of filling up gas tank once — worth it for a full season of weekend trips where cold mornings demand dry suit insulation without breaking budget constraints typical for recreational paddlers on tight schedules between work shifts and family duties after long days at office jobs or remote labor sites near Portland metro area. |
| Gasket Material | Neoprene with silicone backing | Stays flexible in Oregon winter conditions down to 40°F water temps found off Astoria without becoming brittle like cheap rubber alternatives that crack when exposed to salt spray and UV degradation over multiple seasons of exposure during coastal crossings from Brookings northward toward Bandon or further up coastline past Coos Bay area where fog rolls inland frequently creating damp conditions even on sunny days. |
| Fit Adjustment Range | Standard one-size design with elastic closure system | Works for most neck sizes between 13 to 17 inches circumference without needing custom fitting sessions that require professional gear fitters available only at specialty shops in downtown Seattle or Portland’s Pearl District area where prices climb significantly above retail markups charged by big-box retailers online. |
| Compatibility | Fits standard drysuit collars and hoods sold globally | Compatible with major brands like NRS Extreme SAR, Kokatat Meridian, Level Six Emperor so you don’t need to buy matching hood systems from same manufacturer line if your favorite suit comes from different brand altogether found on clearance racks at REI or local kayak shops selling used Perception Carolina 14.5 models still floating well after twenty years of use despite minor wear marks along perimeter seams showing age gracefully without catastrophic failure modes seen in newer plastic-bodied suits lacking reinforced bulkhead reinforcement plates around cockpit coamings designed to withstand repeated impact forces from rolling maneuvers underwater during whitewater runs on Sandy River rapids near Hood River Oregon border towns. |
