The Short Answer
After spending a weekend cold-water snorkeling at Crater Lake in mid-October where the air was biting and the lake surface hovered around 58°F, I found this mask offers exceptional peripheral vision for spotting underwater fish or navigating tight coves without fogging up. It weighs approximately 14 ounces when wet and features a silicone skirt that resists saltwater corrosion after trips on Lake Billy Chinook near Corvallis. If you need reliable visibility in low-light conditions during late-season coastal paddling, this is the one to grab.

Who This Is For ✅
✅ Cold-water snorkelers who need a dry seal through 55°F water while exploring tide pools on the Oregon Coast near Astoria without fogging up their lenses quickly.
✅ Frequent river runners looking for backup gear to inspect submerged obstacles or fish activity in clear stretches of the Clackamas River during summer runoff when visibility is critical.
✅ Divers who require a wide-angle field of view like 180 degrees while waiting for currents to settle after running Class III whitewater on the Sandy River above Portland.
✅ Anglers utilizing spearfishing techniques near Newport or Seaside where maintaining situational awareness with both eyes open prevents drifting into deeper drop-offs in kelp beds.
Who Should Skip The Mares X-One Snorkel Mask ❌
❌ Divers relying solely on this mask for deep dives below 40 feet will find the skirt may not maintain a perfect seal under significant pressure after an hour of submersion off the coast near Brookings.
❌ Users seeking built-in corrective lenses need to know that adding prescription inserts adds bulk and can compromise the low-profile fit required for streamlined underwater movement on Lake Billy Chinook.
❌ People with very narrow faces or high cheekbones might struggle to achieve a comfortable seal if their skin does not match the curvature of the silicone skirt found in this unit from Mares.
❌ Snorkelers who prefer adjustable nose pockets that slide up and down independently will find this model has a fixed configuration that limits adjustment options for varying facial structures on long tours.
Real World Testing
I took the mask out to Crater Lake National Park during an October weekend where temperatures dropped into the upper 40s, creating challenging conditions for anyone not acclimated to cold water immersion. The lens clarity remained sharp even after submerging in turbulent currents near the boat launch area, and I was able to see fish hiding behind rocks without adjusting my position constantly like with other brands tested previously on Puget Sound trips. During a three-hour session paddling from Astoria down to Cannon Beach with sustained 8-knot crosswinds that whipped whitecaps across the surface, the mask stayed dry against sweat and salt spray while I checked for submerged debris before entering deeper water zones near sea stacks. The silicone skirt did not show signs of degradation after multiple trips through kelp forests where ropes tangle easily around gear bags left on shorelines along Highway 101 between Newport and Lincoln City.
Later, I ran the Deschutes River above Redmond in June with a load weight simulating full backpacks containing approximately 25 pounds of camping equipment to test stability under dynamic conditions typical for whitewater enthusiasts who also enjoy snorkeling after portaging sections near trailheads along US Highway 97. The mask held its seal even when I braced hard against waves generated by heavy winds pushing water over the surface during a rapid descent through Class II-III hydraulics, which often dislodges cheaper masks with softer rubber gaskets found in generic outdoor stores around Portland or Eugene. After rinsing off in cold mountain streams flowing from snowmelt above Bend and returning to warm springs near La Pine later that afternoon, I noticed no discoloration on the lens coating despite exposure to mineral-rich water containing high levels of dissolved solids typical for volcanic river systems originating from Cascade lava flows centuries ago before reaching the Columbia Gorge region downstream toward The Dalles.
Quick Specs Breakdown
| Spec | Value | What It Means For You |
|---|---|---|
| Weight | Approximately 14 ounces wet | Light enough to carry in a dry bag without adding noticeable bulk during river portages or boat launches along the Willamette River trail system. |
| Field of View | Roughly 180 degrees horizontal | Wide angle lets you monitor surroundings while waiting for currents to calm after running rapids on the Sandy River above Oregon City near I-5 exits. |
| Lens Material | Double-layer tempered glass | Prevents fogging even in humid coastal environments where salt air accumulates inside gear compartments during overnight stays at campsites like those managed by BLM lands near Florence, OR. |
| Skirt Type | Soft silicone with nose pocket | Provides a comfortable seal without pinching sensitive skin areas common for users wearing neoprene hoods found at local surf shops in Cannon Beach or Seaside markets selling winter wetsuits year-round since 1985 when surfing culture began growing here originally along Tillamook Bay shoreslines stretching northward toward Astoria lighthouse views overlooking Pacific Ocean horizons visible from Highway 101 overlooks near Waldport. |
