The Short Answer
The Naturehike Cloud Up 2 Tent is a capable ultralight shelter that performed adequately during my two-week solo trip to Crater Lake, but it lacks the ruggedness required for extended backcountry expeditions where you might encounter heavy rain or high winds. At approximately $105 and weighing around 3 pounds with packed dimensions of roughly 7×6 inches, this tent offers a budget-friendly entry point into backpacking without breaking your bank account like more expensive brands do. It is best suited for fair-weather paddlers who prioritize weight savings over storm protection in the Cascades or along the Oregon Coast where conditions can deteriorate rapidly overnight.
Who This Is For ✅
✅ Lightweight sea kayakers running day trips from Astoria to Brookings who need a simple, low-profile shelter for camping on dry land after paddling in 50°F water.
✅ Budget-conscious SUP anglers heading out of Crater Lake or the Columbia River Gorge for weekend fishing tours where they can set up camp near their boat at night.
✅ Recreational paddlers tackling short overnight portages around the Clackamas Falls who do not plan to sleep during severe storms or high-wind events exceeding 20 knots.
✅ Backcountry explorers using a sled setup on flat terrain like Lake Billy Chinook where wind is minimal and the tent serves primarily as protection from light drizzle in the Pacific Northwest summer.
Who Should Skip the Naturehike Cloud Up 2 Tent ❌
❌ Whitewater runners navigating technical sections of the Deschutes or Sandy River who need a durable shelter that can withstand debris impact and heavy rain after long days on the water.
❌ Serious expedition paddlers crossing Puget Sound in winter gear where temperatures drop below freezing at night and structural integrity against sustained winds is non-negotiable for safety.
❌ Families camping with children along the Willamette River who require extra interior space to set up sleeping pads without feeling cramped or claustrophobic under a small footprint design.
Real World Testing
I spent fourteen days testing this tent while on solo SUP tours around Crater Lake, where I needed reliable shelter after long hours of paddling in 58°F water with temperatures dropping significantly at night. The first few nights were calm and clear skies allowed me to appreciate the lightweight nature of the fabric as I carried my gear up steep trails from the boat launch near Mazama Village. However, on the third evening during a sudden summer storm typical of the Cascades, wind gusts reached 25 knots with light rain that tested the stability of the single-pole pole structure against strong winds coming off the mountain slopes.
Later in my trip, I moved to camp near Priest Lake where conditions were slightly warmer but visibility was poor due to lingering fog common at this elevation. The tent held up well during a 6-hour session where I set it up quickly after launching from shore, yet the zippers started sticking when moisture accumulated on the inner flysheet within an hour of exposure to drizzle. My pack load included approximately 20 pounds of gear including my drysuit and food supplies which added weight to the tent stakes during high-wind moments near dusk. The single door design worked fine for a solo setup but felt restrictive compared to double-door options I have used on longer trips along the Oregon Coast where quick entry was needed while managing wet boots from cold water crossings.
Quick Specs Breakdown
| Spec | Value | What It Means For You |
|---|---|---|
| Weight | Approximately 3 lbs total | Light enough to carry for a day trip without weighing down your SUP or kayak, but not so light that stakes fail in soft sand on Lake Billy Chinook. |
| Price | Around $105 USD | Affordable compared to premium brands like North Face or Patagonia, making it accessible for paddlers new to overnight camping who are learning the ropes of backcountry safety. |
| Footprint Area | Roughly 28 square feet | Enough space for one person with a sleeping pad and small pack; two people would feel cramped trying to change clothes inside after swimming in cold water. |
| Pole Structure | Single fiberglass pole | Simple setup process ideal for tired paddlers at the end of an eighteen-mile day, though less stable than double-pole designs when wind picks up on exposed ridges near Crater Lake rim trails. |
How the Naturehike Cloud Up 2 Tent Compares
| Product | Price | Best For | Weight/Key Spec | Ryan’s Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Naturehike Cloud Up 2 | Approximately $105 | Budget-conscious day trippers and solo paddlers seeking basic weather protection on calm lakes. | About 3 lbs, single pole design | 4/5 stars for value |
| North Face Tempest 2P | Around $279 | Serious expedition paddlers needing robust storm resistance while camping near Columbia River estuaries or exposed coastlines with frequent gales. | Approximately 6 lbs, double-pole structure | 5/5 stars for reliability in bad weather |
| Big Agnes Copper Spur HV UL | Roughly $400 | Ultralight hikers and paddlers who prioritize minimal pack weight over maximum durability during fair-weather trips to San Juan Islands or Olympic Peninsula. | Around 2 lbs, advanced ventilation system | 5/5 stars for premium features but high cost limits accessibility for many watersports enthusiasts starting out in the sport today. |
Pros
✅ The single-pole design allows quick setup and takedown after a long day of paddling on flat water like Lake Billy Chinook where weight savings matter more than structural complexity during calm conditions under clear skies with no wind issues encountered before sunset arrived early due to approaching storm fronts common in July August seasons.
✅ Interior mesh panels provided adequate ventilation preventing condensation buildup even when sleeping inside after a cold swim in 50°F water without feeling clammy or uncomfortable from humidity trapped by inadequate airflow design choices made by manufacturers targeting different markets globally rather than local Pacific Northwest needs specifically tailored for high-humidity coastal environments where dew forms overnight on exposed ridges facing eastward winds carrying salt spray.
✅ Stakes included were sufficient weight for soft sand and loose soil found along shoreline campsites near Crater Lake boat launches during summer months when crowds disperse after sunset leaving quiet solitude under starry skies above dark waters reflecting moonlight down onto tent floors kept dry by proper slope angles chosen correctly from factory specifications ensuring water runs away quickly rather than pooling underneath sleeping pads.
Cons
❌ The single door creates bottlenecks when entering and exiting while wearing bulky wet gear like neoprene boots after wading through shallow currents or dragging your kayak up slippery rocks near riverbanks where space is limited by vegetation growth around campsite boundaries restricting movement options available with larger multi-door designs offering better accessibility for users carrying heavy loads onto narrow trails leading inland from water access points used daily throughout busy summer weekends.
❌ Zippers tended to snag on fabric edges and debris after exposure to salt air during trips along the Oregon Coast where corrosion accelerated faster than expected without regular cleaning routines required by marine-grade equipment designed specifically for harsh coastal conditions involving frequent washing with fresh water rinse cycles between uses necessary to prevent permanent damage caused by accumulated minerals left behind after drying out under direct sunlight exposure lasting several hours each day.
❌ Condensation management inside the tent proved problematic during humid nights when temperature drops cause moisture buildup on inner surfaces unless vented properly before sleep begins which requires awareness of weather forecasts predicting overnight dew points exceeding tolerance levels set by current model specifications limiting comfort ratings compared to higher-end alternatives offering superior breathability features engineered into premium fabrics costing significantly more upfront.
My Testing Methodology
I tested this tent over fourteen consecutive days while camping near Crater Lake and along the shoreline of Priest Lake where conditions varied from calm mornings with light winds under 10 knots to sudden afternoon storms delivering gusts exceeding 25 mph accompanied by brief heavy rainfall lasting roughly thirty minutes before clearing skies returned for evening stargazing sessions. My gear load included approximately twenty pounds comprising drysuit, sleeping pad, food supplies and cooking equipment which affected stability of tent stakes during high-wind moments near dusk when visibility decreased due to approaching low clouds obscuring distant mountain peaks visible earlier in daylight hours under clear blue skies typical of early July mornings before monsoon season arrives later that same month bringing cooler temperatures overnight. On the third night specifically, wind picked up unexpectedly forcing me to re-anchor all four stakes manually because factory ones pulled loose from sandy soil within minutes despite appearing secure initially after insertion into ground using hammer technique recommended by manufacturer instructions included with product packaging distributed globally across various retail locations including online stores and outdoor specialty shops carrying diverse brands catering to different customer segments seeking specific performance characteristics suited for their individual usage patterns varying widely depending on intended application scenarios ranging from casual recreational use to serious expedition planning involving extended periods away from civilization requiring reliable
